Global Fund Private Sector Delegation

Designed as a public-private partnership, and now the leading funding agency for global health, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria is a vital partner in the business fight against these pandemics.

The Global Business Coalition serves as an entry-point for collaboration with the Global Fund, orchestrating the private sector delegation on the Global Fund Board of Directors, enabling co-investments and facilitating other corporate engagement with Fund's recipients worldwide.

The Global Fund's scale and reach make it an ideal partner for the private sector—bringing to the table a strategic mix of donor and recipient governments, civil society organizations, private foundations and corporations.

A performance-driven funding instrument, with solid performance milestones and oversight mechanisms, the Global Fund also represents one of the most efficient avenues for business investment in these pandemics, while also providing strategic opportunities for co-financing and collaboration on the ground. To date, the Global Fund has committed a remarkable $11.3 billion to 136 countries.

Support Effective Global Fund Governance

As the Focal Point for the Private Sector Delegation on the Board of the fund, the Coalition works with dozens of committed businesses willing to contribute to the Global Fund's agenda, advise the board's deliberations, ensure that the body remains performance-driven and advocate for the business role in global health.

A Private Sector Advisory Group was established to help orchestrate this support to the fund. The group is composed of like-minded companies eager to advance the fund's agenda and ensure the presence of private sector delegation members at each board meeting. The Advisory Group also elects the board member, alternate board member and focal point.

The New York-based focal point (GBC) works with the private sector board member and alternate board member—at present, McKinsey & Company and Anglo American respectively. This team of private sector representatives help steer Global Fund priorities and ensures that Global Fund initiatives actively engage the business sector.

Focus Business Resources

Through its networks with the Global Fund, the Coalition has brokered a number of major co-financing partnerships that put business resources to use on Global Fund projects.

Earlier this year, the Coalition facilitated the creation of a new funding initiative in which the Chevron Corporation was named the Global Fund's first ever Corporate Champion. Through the innovative new partnership, Chevron has committed $30 million to Global Fund activities that dovetail with the company's work in select countries.

Most recently, Marathon Oil Corporation announced a major new $28 million co-investment with the government of Equatorial Guinea—a lead investment for the Coalition's Malaria Capital Campaign aimed at raising $100M for malaria by the end of 2010, benefitting the Global Fund's malaria control programs.

The (RED) Campaign is another key vehicle of private support to the Global Fund, engaging private sector companies and regular consumers in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa. All profits made from (RED) branded products are donated to the Global Fund. To date (RED) has driven over $100 million into Global Fund programs.

Facilitate In-country Engagement

Many Coalition members are actively involved with the Global Fund's Country Coordinating Mechanisms (CCMs)—the country-specific multi-sector bodies overseeing the Global Fund grant application and stewardship process in country.

Initiatives that are approved by the CCMs and implemented by either government or civil society players on the ground are frequently in need of co-financing or management support from the private sector.

Coalition staff frequently link member companies to such strategic opportunities on the ground, identifying gaps where business competencies or resources can make real impact.
