Evolving Business Interventions: John Damonti of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation

The fight against AIDS has evolved dramatically since SECURE THE FUTURE™ (STF) was first launched 10 years ago. How have you adapted your programs as major initiatives such as PEPFAR & the Global Fund have been launched and implemented?
When STF was launched in 1999, the international community was just beginning to wake up to the devastation and scope of the HIV epidemic in Africa, and the global response was in its infancy. With the initial commitment of US$100 million in funding for five countries (increased over the years to over US$150 million for 14 countries), STF was the first and largest private philanthropic commitment to focus on AIDS in Africa. And the approach from the beginning was that this was going to be a program for Africa, shaped and run by Africans and identifying and implementing sustainable African solutions.
