GBC's Third TB Workshop sponsored by Lilly MDR-TB Partnership

Author: GBC Staff

Convened with significant support and guidance from the Lilly MDR-TB Partnership, GBC's third TB technical workshop in South Africa focused on working with small and medium-sized enterprises in the supply chain as a critical component of expanding the reach of workplace programs.

In addition to decision-makers and program implementers from NGOs and government, representatives of 14 GBC member companies, including Eli Lilly & Co., Afrox, Eskom, Rio Tinto, Standard Chartered Bank, Shell Oil, BD, Mercedes Benz, Standard Bank, Unilever and Xstrata participated in the sessions.  The October 15 event was the last of a series of similar events in 2009 aimed to both increase the number of companies actively managing TB in the workplace while also improving the quality and effectiveness of existing programs.

Participants reviewed case studies of successful supply chain engagement models implemented by VW South Africa and Unilever.  In addition, Dr. Lindiwe Mvusi, Director of the South Africa Department of Health National TB Control Program, shared her strategic priorities for 2010, highlighting how the private sector can engage with the government in combating TB.

Panelists also provided information on the registration process for companies interested in being registered as National Treatment Centers for TB.
