Founded in 2001, the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GBC) has spent the past seven years developing a rapidly expanding alliance of over 200 international companies dedicated to combating the AIDS epidemic through the business sector’s unique skills and expertise. Headquartered in New York, GBC maintains regional offices in Beijing, Geneva, Johannesburg, Nairobi, and Paris; it harnesses the individual and collective power of the world’s top corporations to fight AIDS at the local, national, and international levels.
Following its May 2005 appointment as the official focal point of the private sector delegation to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), GBC began seriously considering adding tuberculosis and malaria to its mandate. After polling its membership and receiving an overwhelmingly positive response to this proposal, the organization is moving forward. The new GBC—the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria—retains its dedication to HIV/AIDS but is also pleased to provide its members with malaria and tuberculosis guidance, services, and expertise. GBC is currently in the process of merging with the Transatlantic Partners Against AIDS (TPAA).
GBC unites businesses in the fight against HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria
Over the last five years, GBC has grown from 17 companies to over 200 international companies dedicated to fighting the AIDS pandemic by accessing the business sector's unique skills and expertise.
GBC’s four main goals facilitate its mission to harness the power of the global business community to end the HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria epidemics:
Increase the number and diversity of companies committed to fighting global epidemics by engaging new businesses to join its extensive network of member companies.
Increase business action against HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria, and improve the quality and reach of company and community programs. By leveraging their existing skills, products and networks, companies have a unique opportunity to respond to pandemics in myriad ways; GBC’s Business AIDS Methodology (BAM)™ enables each individual member company to develop an appropriate custom-made HIV/AIDS business plan and strategy, and its Best Practice AIDS Standard (BPAS)™ allows confidential monitoring and evaluation
Enhance and facilitate the use of companies' core competencies and products in the fight against HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria: GBC believes that regardless of its area of expertise and global location, the business sector can offer much more than financial support to end the HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria epidemics. As such, GBC encourages members—especially those that do not have a direct bottom-line stake in disease prevention and treatment—to think outside the box and create innovative ways to fight HIV/AIDS, malaria, and TB. The organization facilitates this goal by fostering unique partnerships with NGOs, governments and civil society.
Use business power to advocate for HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria issues and lead the epidemic’s response. GBC uses the private sector’s power to influence and shape public policy. It creates opportunities for business leaders to speak out on HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria and enables companies to lend their name to the fight. In countries heavily affected by the epidemics, GBC encourages the business sector to partner with public sector officials and help coordinate national strategy.
