Each year, December 1st marks World AIDS Day, a time when we stop to remember people infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS; when we monitor and assess the progress of the AIDS epidemic; and when we celebrate the positive impact of our efforts. Every day 8,500 people die from AIDS-related causes and 13,000 others are newly infected with HIV. The statistics are staggering, but the numbers do not lie. We can—and must—do more to stop the spread of this global killer.
In 2005, GBC and its members commemorated World AIDS Day with events in Beijing, Paris and Johannesburg, Nairobi, and Geneva. In an effort to help companies better engage in the fight against AIDS, GBC also developed the first measurement system for companies to evaluate the efficacy of their AIDS programs.
GBC Best Practice AIDS Standard
In response to growing demand from our members, GBC created the first measurement system for business and AIDS - a new Best Practice AIDS Standard (BPAS) for corporate HIV/AIDS programs.
Offered exclusively to GBC members, the BPAS is a quantitative tool to measure company involvement in the fight against AIDS and guide future strategies for addressing the pandemic. Developed through our work with over 200 global companies and from principles informing our Awards for Business Excellence, we hope BPAS will help you assess your own progress and develop strategies based on corporate best practices.
During the six months following World AIDS Day we will held roundtable meetings with companies in Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America designed to further improve this system of measurement. As always, we were happy to work with member companies, using the standards to help guide their individual strategies through our Business AIDS Methodology (BAM™).
