New Action Plan to Fill Gaps, Coordinate, and Focus for Deeper Impact

The fight against AIDS, TB, and malaria is being lost but GBC is part of the solution. Based on the experiences so far in defining the business role in the fight, GBC and its members have identified a path forward that will produce even greater results.

Our new agenda includes:

  • GBC Impact Initiatives T--collaborations that coordinate public, private, and NGO talents into focused action teams.
  • GBC will establish clear, actionable principles and standards for baseline corporate engagement on AIDS, TB and malaria.
  • GBC will provide active guidance and assistance for businesses to maximize their impact.

Publication to Enhance Company Action

Business Response magazine

The upcoming Business Response magazine will explore GBC's new action plan, looking at examples of the problems it's designed to address and some replicable business solutions.

The upcoming issue will feature illuminating articles examining the gaps in current philanthropic strategy, the feminization of HIV/AIDS, and drug use in Russia and Ukraine, among others.

Innovative Company Tackles Malaria Prevention, African Development

The manufacturer of the Olyset® long lasting insecticidal net (LLIN), has placed itself on the front line in the war against malaria while investing directly in African industry.

Sumitomo chemical is set to open a new Tanzanian factory that will employ more than 4,200 people locally, the first on the African continent to be recommended by the World Health Organization Pesticide Evaluation Scheme. The factory will help boost production of Sumitomo's groundbreaking ready-treated bednets, which remain insecticidally active for at least five years without needing to be re-treated by users.

World AIDS Day on the Great Wall of China

Through a diverse array of media, advocacy and commemorative events worldwide this year, GBC helped to enhance broader awareness of the private sector response to the AIDS epidemic.

Events in Beijing, Johannesburg, Kyiv, Moscow, Nairobi, New York and Toronto have helped raise the profile of the business response and the release of a number of new GBC resources will help to increase member capacities in the future fight.

Ukraine to Establish AIDS Czar after Meeting with GBC Leadership

After reaching an agreement with GBC President and CEO Richard Holbrooke and Executive Director John Tedstrom, Ukrainian Prime Minister Victor Yanukovich has promised to appoint a national "czar" for AIDS and TB.

The agreement came on the heels of the GBC Leaders Forum held last month in Moscow, Russia, which highlighted the critical need for engagement by the public and private sectors on AIDS and TB in the region.
