GBC East and Central Africa - Nairobi

GBC's Nairobi office serves members with a particular interest or operations in East and Central Africa. Special programs managed by GBC's Nairobi office include:

  • Health at Home/Kenya, a groundbreaking Coalition partnership among business, government and an on-the-ground NGO to bring HIV testing to two million Kenyans.
  • GBC and our private sector partners in the region also work with the Kenyan government's national HIV testing campaign, and have hosted several public testing events for CEOs designed to leverage business' power and influence to reinforce the importance of knowing one's HIV status.
  • The Nairobi office also coordinates GBC's work with national and regional business coalitions around the world.
  • The Vice President and Regional Director of East and Central Africa, Patricia Mugambi Ndegwa, serves as the private sector representative on the World AIDS Campaign Steering Committee.

Health at Home/Kenya Impact Initiative

Overseen by the Coalition's Nairobi-based staff, our first Impact Initiative in sub-Saharan Africa is mobilizing business, government and a proven on-the-ground service provider to bring door-to-door HIV testing to up to two million people in Western Kenya. Health at Home/Kenya combines the resources and competencies of multiple companies, the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and the Kenyan government with the proven implementation model of AMPATH, a local NGO.

Partnering with the Government of Kenya

The Nairobi office maintains a close working relationship with the Kenya National AIDS Control Council (NACC), the Kenyan government's coordinating agency on HIV/AIDS, and has undertaken several partnerships with the NACC in support of the Kenyan government's vision of reaching 80 percent of Kenya's population with HIV testing and counseling by 2010.

On World AIDS Day in 2007 and 2008 the Nairobi office collaborated with the NACC to organize widely-publicized CEO testing campaigns. The campaigns leveraged high profile Kenyan business leaders to help reduce stigma around HIV testing and encourage Kenyans to get tested at work.

In addition to providing leadership and support to business coalitions around the world, the Nairobi office serves as the focal point and secretariat of the Pan African Business Coalition against AIDS (PABC), whose membership is comprised of national business coalitions across Africa. Coalition staff provides the PABC with technical, advocacy and governance support, and helped convene the PABC Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa in May 2008.
